It's good to see Wembley Stadium is going to be opening at last.
I lived in Wembley for years, and often went to the old stadium and to the Empire Pool, which had become a skating rink.
I went the first time for the school celebration of the coronation of George VI. I also went to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, 1946 I think it was. What a difference from the opening ceremonies they hold today!
They used to hold Speedway and Greyhound Racing at the old stadium. I wonder if they will be at the new one. It looks a very fine place with great seats. On TV it looked as though the grass needed cutting.
It is a pity they removed the two round towers though, they gave the old stadium a bit of character.
Yes, the sand really is black at Muriwai, it is ironsand. It's not as black as it looks in the photo, though, more of a grey colour. In summer it gets almost too hot to stand on. It is mined for steel further down the coast, but fortunately Muriwai and Piha are still untouched.
There are pieces of pumice to be found there, too. It comes down the Waikato river and floats up the coast. Handy stuff. Good for rough heels.
The Romans used to shave by rubbing their chins with pumice, sometimes!
Have you ever stood beside a rack that was actually used in older times? I have, in a small museum, I think it was in Taunton. It was among various relics from the Monmouth Rebellion, in Judge Jeffries' day.
At first I viewed it like a film prop, working out what lever etc did what. Then I suddenly realised what had happened with it. It felt like a kick in the guts. My people were West country. I'm not psychic, but I did wonder if one of my ancestors was involved. Horrible!

What a great website! I'm saving this one. The technical stuff will be over my head, and I don't play video games, but clicking around, I found Google's possible involvement with the CIA, and a new discovery about the flamingo.
The Covenant was first made with Abraham, from the Sumerian culture, not with Moses, the Hebrew fostered by Pharaoh's daughter. One would expect Moses (Egyptian name!) to have known of many Egyptian customs.
Would Ur of the Chaldees have been influenced much by Egyptian ideas? It was a long way for trade caravans to go.
Abraham is thought to have lived around 2,000 BC. This was around the end of the eleventh dynasty and the start of the twelfth, in Egypt. (The pyramids were already about 500-600 years old.)
The "Pharaoh" of the Bible was thought to have been Ramses II (Various spellings) around 1300 BC. pre 1600 would be rather early for him. Various Pharaohs have been suggested, Ahmose I is also a choice, linking the Exodus with the expulsion of the Hyksos. I've even seen a suggestion that Hatshepsut was the Pharaoh! But surely the Bible writers would have mentioned a female Pharaoh.
The latest estimate for the date of the Exodus is 1446 BC
I wonder if there was a very large tsunami that affected the Red Sea around that time. That could account for the way the Israelites were able to cross, while Pharaoh's army drowned.
7/3/2018 Some time since I posted anything here. Since them I have a new computer and a lot of changes. Eighty eight now, perhaps I will end up a "centurion" , as the papers here sometimes spell it. Geopelia

At last the picture has finally got here!
why "Geospiza"?
I like the Darwin Finches of the Galapagos.
a good site for them is
http://www.rit.edu/~rhrsbi/
GalapagosPages/DarwinFinch.html
Those little birds have caused a lot of controversy among humans, since Darwin's time!
(Would you believe there is a Vampire Finch? G.difficilis, the Sharp-beaked Finch.)
This is crazy! It seems to get different results every time.
Why Geopelia? That is a genus of small doves.
I like the diamond dove, a very tough little bird for its size. I've seen one fight a mouse as big as itself, and win the battle.
Oena capensis is the cape, masked or Namaqua dove, a ridiculously tame little bird, and a great pet.

Labour weekend coming up, I need to dig the garden for the tomatoes.
It will probably rain though.
Some years ago we dug the footings for a wall on Labour weekend, it was very hot. Now it still seems to be winter. Where is this Global Warming?
I'm trying Siberian tomatoes this year, also Tiny Tim, Big Beef and Acid Free.

Much talk about evolution and creation etc on the radio today.
What kind of Intelligent Designer would design a beautiful planet and then create humans?
The planet may be uninhabitable by 2100 AD. I won't be around much after 2030, when I'll be 101.
Apres moi le deluge!
